Request for Quote (RFQ) Process - Notes and Tips

Request for Quote (RFQ) Process - Notes and Tips

We know that getting a quote for model fabrication can involve a lot of details and back-and-forth communication. To make this easier, especially for those new to working with us, we've put together a guide that lays out essential tips and insights. This guide aims to make your interactions with us smooth and efficient. If you know someone just starting in industrial design or someone who hasn't worked with us before, please share this guide with them!

3D CAD Data

When preparing your models for production, we need to adjust your CAD files. This includes accommodating manufacturing constraints, adding necessary structural elements, and setting appropriate tolerances. We prefer to work with STEP/STP files because they are widely compatible and reduce software compatibility issues that often occurs with native CAD formats like SolidWorks, Rhino, AutoCAD, etc.

Note: While STEP/STP is preferred, we can work with other universal file formats, such as IGES/IGS or X_T.

Color, Material, and Finish (CMF)

Material choices play a significant role in determining costs. For example, metals are generally more expensive and challenging to work with than plastics. Surface finishes, such as mirror polishing or anodizing, can also affect the costs. To help us provide you with a quick and accurate quote, please specify the desired color, material, and finish for each part.

Note: While the color is unnecessary for the initial quote, we need the material and finish information to proceed. If color standard references or a physical sample can't define a specific color, a separate color development process will be required.

Important features and functional requirements

If your model needs to function like a real product or demonstrate a specific design feature, adding mechanical and/or electrical functions may be necessary. Describing these functions in detail is important as these elements can significantly affect the cost.

Note: While written descriptions are helpful, we would greatly appreciate animations or snapshots showcasing any LED lighting effects, sequences, and moving part requirements. These visual aids will help us better understand your vision.

Artwork/Graphic files

While artwork or graphic details usually don't affect the quote, providing this information upfront allows us to provide a more thorough feasibility assessment, especially if the artwork or graphic plays a significant role in the design.

Note: If there are any artwork or graphics requirements, it would be helpful to receive an outlined vector file format alongside the model outline to pinpoint the exact placement and location.

Optional information

Don't hesitate to send us any samples or materials you'd like us to use or consider during the fabrication, whether in the form of a website link or physical item. If your project has a deadline, please let us know so we can plan accordingly. Any additional details about the project would be greatly appreciated.

ModelGo by Image Model

ModelGo is our model-making evaluation tool. It offers an estimated cost range and lead time and helps you explore options, establish ballpark budgets, and plan schedules. Feel free to give it a go for an instant price and lead time estimation range—no files are required!

We encourage early engagement as we are happy to provide general high-level feedback on incomplete files at this point. However, any cost or lead time information can only be provided after the design files are released.

Please feel free to reach out for further questions and inquiries.
